The Start of Something Bigger

Graduating from the University of Greenwich with a degree in Computing Science has been a major milestone in my life, but it’s just the beginning of my story. While pursuing my degree, I was fortunate enough to secure an internship at Total Onion, a creative and talented development team working with some of the most recognizable global brands, such as Ballantine’s, Chivas Regal, The Glenlivet, Beefeater, Aberlour, and many more under the Pernod Ricard umbrella.

The Internship that Became a Career

During my second year of university, I joined Total Onion as an intern, working two days a week while balancing my studies. To say I had no experience would be an understatement—I had the foundational knowledge from my classes, but real-world application was a whole new frontier. Thankfully, the team at Total Onion took me under their wing and helped me grow in ways I hadn’t expected. Their mentorship, guidance and support transformed what could have been a daunting experience into one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. The transition from student to intern came with its fair share of challenges. I was thrust into the deep end, working on live projects for some of the world’s most prestigious brands. It was both exciting and intimidating, but the team made all the difference. They not only showed me the ropes but also empowered me to find my own solutions. With each project, I gained confidence and improved my skills, moving from simple tasks to more complex responsibilities. What I valued the most was that my ideas and input were always welcomed, even when I was still learning the ropes.

Joining Full-Time: A New Chapter

Upon completing my studies, Total Onion offered me a full-time position, something I had only dreamed about when I first started. I was thrilled to continue working on incredible projects for global brands, but more importantly, to remain a part of a team that priorities learning, creativity, and collaboration. Total Onion isn’t just a company—it’s a space where developers like me can thrive, regardless of our experience level. The key to my growth was the constant support from the team. They were patient, provided constructive feedback and pushed me to expand my skills. That environment allowed me to grow from a student intern with no professional experience into a fully-fledged developer working on world-renowned brands.

A Message to Others Starting Out

To anyone starting out with little to no experience, my journey is proof that it’s okay to not have all the answers at the beginning. What matters is finding a place where you are supported, challenged and given the opportunity to learn. Total Onion provided me with exactly that, and it made all the difference.

Looking back now, I can see just how pivotal this opportunity has been in shaping my career and I’m excited for what’s next. If you’re passionate about development and ready to dive in, take the leap—you never know where it might lead.
